“The Rope King” is now available for sale
This original canvas artwork is “The King” in Handbrake’s acclaimed “Rope Skulls” series – a triptych of skulls created out of overlapping cords and ropes. It’s a bold blend of aerosol, acrylic, ink marker, gold leaf (take a look at the crown and the teeth!), and glossy epoxy resin set into an impressive ornate frame.
This piece was the first to be painted in the series and is a striking exploration of anatomy on a sandy aerosol fade background. This work is a slight departure from the more well-known Handbrake style as it’s stripped back and simplified, but still retains the recognisable black outlines of HB.
Layered up using many layers of aerosol spray paint and acrylic, this work has a depth and contrast that can only be appreciated in person. The high gloss epoxy resin finish that coats the work deepens the black lines and gives the entire piece a unique appearance.
It has been painted on 2 inch deep stretched canvas and features the main subject (the King’s skull) created out of ropes, overlapping one another, and reminiscent of underlying human muscle. Both the teeth and the King’s crown have been rendered in gold leaf that catches and reflects the light from certain angles, and the entire piece is encased in high-gloss epoxy resin to give it a wavy glass-like finish.
